Packing, Diet & Altitude — Trek Prep Basics.

The same fundamentals apply whether you're headed to Poon Hill or Everest Base Camp. Here's what our guides brief every group on before day one.

Packing

  • Layer up: wicking base, insulating mid-layer, waterproof shell.
  • Break your boots in before the trek — not on it.
  • Poles, headlamp and a well-fitted daypack go further than gadgets.
  • Check your trip's kit list for what's included vs. what to bring.

Diet & Hydration

  • Eat regularly — trekking days burn far more than a normal day.
  • Dal-bhat, rice and potatoes are trail staples for a reason.
  • Sip water steadily through the day, not in big gulps.
  • Go easy on alcohol at altitude — it slows acclimatization.

Altitude Acclimatization

  • Ascend gradually above roughly 3,000m.
  • "Climb high, sleep low" — build in acclimatization days.
  • Watch for headache, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue.
  • Tell your guide immediately — the only fix is to stop or descend.

★★★★★

Our guide knew the trail to Base Camp like his backyard. Even the exposed ridges near Dingboche felt safe.

Crossing Thorong La was the hardest and best day of my life. The support crew never once let us feel unsafe.

Took the family to Langtang for a short trek — manageable trail, great teahouses, kids loved Kyanjin Gompa.
